About Ann Arbor Roller Derby

Ann Arbor Roller Derby is a thriving community of dedicated individuals committed to fostering the sport of roller derby in southeast Michigan. Founded in May 2010, A2RD began with two home teams and an A-level travel team, the Brawlstars, which quickly started competing against other leagues in June 2011.

In July 2012, A2RD became an Apprentice affiliate of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), and continued to grow and evolve. In 2013, the league transitioned to an A/B/C team format, dissolving the home teams and adding a B-level travel team, the Arbor Bruising Co., a C-level travel team, the Ypsilanti Vigilantes, and the Bank for un-teamed skaters (renamed the Renegades in 2019). Finally, in December 2013, A2RD achieved full WFTDA membership, a testament to its unwavering commitment to excellence in sportsmanship, fellowship, and personal development.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and like many other sports, roller derby faced unprecedented challenges. But rather than letting these obstacles hold them back, A2RD took a step back to restructure the league and prepare for the future of roller derby. As a result, the Brawlstars, Bruisers, and Vigilantes were retired (for now), and A2RD now boasts a 30-person travel team and an All-League team, poised to take on whatever challenges come their way.

With its rich history, strong community, and unbridled passion for the sport, A2RD is truly an exceptional organization that continues to inspire skaters and fans alike.
